Safety at the Natural Tidal Pool in Los Gigantes: Please Respect Local Warnings

Los Gigantes Tidal Pool

Los Gigantes is famous for its dramatic cliffs, warm climate, and breathtaking natural beauty — and one of the most striking spots is the natural tidal pool formed in the coastal lava rocks. It’s a place many visitors love to photograph and enjoy when the sea is calm.

But this location can become extremely dangerous in an instant. Over the years, it has tragically claimed multiple lives.

Recently, four people lost their lives after entering the tidal pool despite the beach and access points being officially closed by the authorities due to unsafe sea conditions. This is not the first such incident — and sadly, unless warnings are taken seriously, it may not be the last.

Why the Tidal Pool Is So Dangerous

The pool may appear calm from above, but the ocean here is unpredictable:

  • Sudden large waves can crash into the pool with enormous force
  • Powerful currents can pull swimmers under or out to sea
  • Slippery rocks increase the risk of falling
  • Once waves increase, exiting the pool can become nearly impossible

Every year, emergency services — including helicopters, divers, and rescue teams — are called to assist tourists who ignore warnings. Tragically, not everyone can be saved.

Please Respect Local Warnings

When the authorities — lifeguards, police, or the Ayuntamiento — close access to the tidal pool, it is because conditions are genuinely dangerous. These closures are not suggestions. They are not optional. They exist to save lives.

Whether you are a resident or a visitor, we ask:

👉 If the beach or tidal pool is closed, do NOT enter.
👉 If asked to move away from dangerous areas, please comply immediately.
👉 If signs say "Prohibido el paso" or "No swimming," please respect them.

Ignoring these warnings puts your life at risk — and endangers the rescue teams who may have to risk their own lives to save you.

Why This Matters for Everyone

If accidents and fatalities continue, authorities may have no choice but to restrict or permanently close access to the tidal pool. That would be a significant loss for the entire community — residents, visitors, and the natural heritage of Los Gigantes.

We all want this beautiful place to remain open, safe, and enjoyable.
That is only possible if everyone respects the rules and listens to the experts.

A Message From Los Gigantes Properties

As a local business deeply connected to the community, we want every visitor to enjoy Los Gigantes safely. The natural tidal pool is stunning — but it is also a place where the power of the ocean must be respected.

Please, for your safety and for the safety of others:

  • If you are told not to enter the tidal pool, do not enter.
  • If the beach is closed, stay away.
  • If the sea looks rough, avoid the area entirely.

No photo, no swim, and no moment of fun is worth risking your life.

We also send our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have tragically lost their lives. Our hearts are with you.
